The following is a simple list of recommended gear for a tramp. Some items can be shared/carried between the group. Check with your event host if you are not sure what to take.

Clothing – What to wear?

No JEANS (or any other cotton clothing)

  • Tramping boots
  • Tramping socks (Wool or Merino recommended)
  • Gaiters
  • Waterproof/Windproof top (rain jacket)
  • Waterproof over-trousers
  • Shorts (quick drying)
  • Underclothes (not cotton – sports/merino recommended)
  • Polypropylene/wool tops
  • Long johns
  • Polar fleece jacket or down jacket
  • Gloves (waterproof in winter)
  • Warm hat
  • Once again do not wear cotton…

Hut Clothes (for over-night trips)

These are your dry warm clothes for the hut. Not to be worn when walking:

  • Polypropylene /wool top
  • Polypropylene/wool long johns
  • Socks
  • Underclothes
  • Pair hut shoes (jandals, sneakers, crocs)

Over-night gear

  • Pack (Typically between 12 kg – 15 kg with gear)
  • Plastic pack liner or dry bag (keep your gear dry)
  • Food (See Food section below)
  • Clothing (Additional over night clothing listed above)
  • Sleeping bag (optional liner), ideally in a dry bag
  • Sleeping mat, needed for full huts, tents, or bivvy.
  • Tramping boots
  • Gaiters
  • Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • Topo maps (both paper and phone apps) of the area and compass
  • Torch with spare batteries
  • Camera (optional)
  • Tramping Stove and billy
  • Knife, spoon, bowl, mug
  • Matches or lighter
  • Small sponge/dish cleaning gear
  • Hydration bladder or water bottle – minimum 2 liters
  • Toilet paper and other toiletries
  • Personal first aid kit and medication (See Tramping Safety)
  • Insect repellent
  • Whistle
  • Wallet (or plastic bag with a couple of cards and cash)
  • Plastic bags (for rubbish, wet clothes, etc)
  • Cell phone (See Phone Apps at bottom of page)

  • PLB (See Tramping Safety)

Food

Food can vary between peoples tastes. It’s a personal choice, but here are some ideas:

Breakfast

  • 150gm muesli or cereal, or
  • 75gm porridge and milk powder, or 
  • 75g macaroni and 50gm cheese.

Lunch

  • Bread, Wraps or Crackers
  • Cheese, salami, tuna
  • Fruit
  • Cornish Pastie

 Evening Meal

Some event hosts are super amazing and arrange a shared meal. Spoil them in return to show your gratitude

  • 150gm Pasta or Rice
  • Meat or beans
  • Dried or fresh vegetables
  • Soup
  • Desert

Beverages

  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Milo
  • Milk powder
  • Alcohol optional: Check with event host and be sensible

Snacks

  • Scroggin (nuts, dried fruit, seeds)
  • Chocolate
  • Muesli bars
